The city reported 39 homicides so far in 2025 at the end of June. Last year, community groups aimed to keep the number below triple digits. That goal could be achieved this year.

Even after five deadly shootings this weekend, Columbus' murder rate is still below average.

Columbus saw its 22nd homicide of 2024 on Sunday. As of Monday, that is the lowest number of homicides Columbus has had to date in one year since 2015.

The city has seen 14 homicides in the first two months of the year, the lowest such total since 2015.

Columbus police say community members have helped identify several people as potential suspects in a triple murder that claimed the lives of two young children earlier this month.

Detective Terry Kelley said he believes the shooters involved in last week's shooting which resulted in the death of a young man and two children "absolutely knew" the children were in the car. Kelly said at this point in the investigation, he believes the children might have been the targets.

Columbus has tied the record it set last year for number of homicides. Two shootings this week brought that total to 177, contributing to the trend of increased violence in the city.
